A few things: I'd move Abbey Road up the chart a little bit, somewhere into the top three. Also, I'd definitely put Let It Be above Please Please Me. As acclaimed as the early Beatles were, I still can't stand most of that stuff. Songs like "Love Me Do" or "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" make me want to change the radio station. I see Help as the turning point from Beatlemania-type songs to their more serious, complex, interesting, and and frankly better work, so I'd probably place everything pre-Help on the bottom of my list. Thus the biggest contention I have with your list is your placement of Magical Mystery Tour. Are you serious? Maybe you accidentally switched it with With The Beatles. That, or some yoga-hippy must have fed you the bad masala. I can't myself ranking that one lower than 5 or 6. Also, you left off Let It Be... Naked, which I'd place higher than Let It Be. That's my take.

PS - Nice ride. You and Parker could go cruising together now.

Thanks David!

Been trying to keep up the 6.00 a.m. mantras here in Goa, but it's tough!

Best of luck back in the Material World.

The problem with Magical Mystery Tour in it's 11-song American version (which is the version available on CD) is that it's a hodge-podge of songs rather than a cohesively sequenced album. The first six tracks are nothing more than the soundtrack to the drugged-out, half-assed, critically-blasted TV movie Magical Mystery Tour. Nothing much to go on. (except I Am the Walrus.) The second half is just a repackaging of the previously-released 1967 singles. Sure Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever is on there, but they were recorded during the Sgt. Pepper's sessions, and released before Pepper's even came out. So there's just no cohesion to deem it a well-conceived album. And the movie was just a terrible idea (of Paul's).

Please Please Me and With the Beatles are both great because they showcase the best of the group's covers from their hard-rocking club days in Hamburg and Liverpool (Like Chains, Roll Over Beethoven, and Money.) plus the seeds of Lennon-McCartney songwriting brilliance. A few of the original tunes are dopey, but look, no other group was putting out their own songs at that time, so it's all gotta start somewhere. And it basically took a miracle for EMI Records to take the chance of putting Love Me Do out as the first single instead of a tried-and-true cover. So it's a key precedent to the later, 'glory' years. Plus, they recorded 'Please' in one day, for Crissake. John could barely talk and they had him belting 'Twist and Shout' as they were shutting down Abbey Road.

Let It Be was a bloody mess when they recorded it; basically it's the Beatles' breakup on record. But what great songs! It's surprising how good they sounded despite all the infighting. (Particularly Dig a Pony.) And I also like Let It Be... Naked, but it's not quite right to call it a 'replacement' of the original.

And Abbey Road was made basically as a favor to the fans after the breakup had been decided. So it's more aftermath than pinnacle.

Luke... say hi to your dad--jim w at the law firm. I also think your rating of beatles albums are pretty close. I would move Abbey Road up ... definitely Sgt. Peppers is #1. I went on a one week bike ride once and only had a sgt. peppers tape. Do you know what it like to hear that over and over for a week ? I have that album memorized. Anyway, have fun !!!

How do you have Let It Be ranked 9th? Did you forget how to count in India? It does not go 1,2,3,9... it goes 1,2,3,4. You look a lot skinnier too.

Peace
